Newest Update

Journal entry by OLIVIA MICK

Latest update for those that are still following along is that there is a high chance I will need to have a rather intense surgery.

on may 11th I had a follow up pet scan to my first post-treatment one. On may 24th I had my visit to discuss the findings and have my 3 month pap

the good news is there is still no visible signs of disease. My uterus and cervix are still soft and flexible, there continues to be very little signs of radiation damage internally and generally my recovery is going quite well.

The more complicated, not quite bad, but definitely frustrating news is that they are concerned that SOMETHING is still showing on the pet at 6 months out.
-it hasn’t grown, fact it has shrunk slightly
-it hasn’t spread
The fact that it isn’t behaving like progressive disease is a good sign, but due to the location (within the cervical canal between the os and my uterus) it can’t be biopsied.
until it either progresses or resolves we won’t know if if is cancer or chronic inflammation due to radiation.

so. I basically have two options
Option 1-have what’s called an abdominal completion hysterectomy. A vertical 5-7 inch incision from belly button to groin removing my ovaries, tubes, uterus, cervix and possibly a 1 cm portion of the wall. This option gives the most favorable cancer results but is invasive and has a long recovery time where I would need to be off work. It is also mostly preventative at this stage.

Option 2- continue to monitor the situation via 3 month pet scans. The risk being if it WERE to spread, to say the bones, the options for treatment then are severely limited. Again noting that there is currently minimal activity showing, no spread, and no active growth.

I'm weighing my options and doing as much research as I can. The situation is somewhat unusual due to the lack of evidence and there are far fewer people who get a completion hysterectomy AFTER the treatment modality of chemo rads has already been used.

if anyone would like to donate funding towards the possible recovery time associated with surgery, the medical costs, or anything else at this time, it would greatly be appreciated as this will likely mean continued unemployment for a further 3 months, likely without the benefit of unemployment insurance, or short term disability insurance, and possibly out of pocket as I am coming to the end of my initial financial assistance from the hospital.

2-3 months of basic living exspenses (housing, utilities, food):~$4,000
1-2 pet scans (these may or may not be covered by the hospital, I’m not sure yet):~$8,000

you can Venmo/cash app me directly and the money will be deposited into a medical savings account.
