Newest Update

Journal entry by Smith Family

Hello Friends,

It has been way too long since our last post. I apologize for those wanting updates via this venue.

Taylor’s progress moved as expected over the months and I am thrilled to share her mobility successes include walking easily with a walker donated by our wonderful CNA, Calyn. Calyn provides Taylor care as well as company. She quickly became part of our family!  Taylor works hard at therapy regardless of the pain.  She attends therapy three times per week as long as she feels physically able. She experiences extreme nausea now that she is mobile. The doctors cannot explain why or how to prevent the nausea.  I would love to hear If anyone shares similar symptoms and any remedy other than prescriptions to control.

Taylor wears an AFO on her left foot/leg.  She chose a pretty shade of pink.  We hope the foot drop improves with time however we see no change to date. After our Friday appointment The trauma doctors believe this condition is permanent. Taylor & I both find this unacceptable and planned a visit with a tendon transplant specialist. We both feel the need to explore every possible option but It will be months before we move in that direction.  My goal is to get Taylor back into flip flops!

Taylor’s  pelvis healed as expected and the fixator removal surgery went perfectly. She began weight-bearing within 24 hours and graduated to the walker within weeks. We are ready to bid farewell to the wheelchair once the bones in her right foot strengthen.

Unfortunately the right foot suffered significant damage from the accident. There is a lot of hardware in that foot. We learned that bones can take up to two years to recover on Friday. The doctor recommended her doses of calcium and vitamin D going forward. The right foot pain impacts her ability to progress which is frustrating. Additional water therapy may improve the bone deterioration so that’s the plan beginning this week!

Some really good news to share… Doctor approved visits to Carowinds! No drop tower but the smooth riding coasters got a definite yes!!! We look forward to this adventure!

I thank God daily for my miracle girl.  Some days her personality presents challenges which I gladly wouldn’t trade for anything. Thank you all for your amazing prayers. I believe 100% those prayers were answered and continue to motivate our family.

Today is super special because I have my WHOLE family. God is great!  This is the best Mother’s Day ever.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there ❤️

Love & Prayers from
Cyndie, Taylor & family
