Hello Again Everyone,
You knew that Sylvia's journey would be a long one. We are reactivating the Caring Bridge journal to give you an update. Sylvia has written the following message today:
Well friends and family it is time to face another big challenge. I saw a colon specialist surgeon last week and had some tests. It turns out things are looking pretty dicey in my abdomen and it is time to have surgery. I am scheduled for this coming Monday morning for a 6 to 12 hour surgery. For any updates I would look on this website that either my daughter or my sister will be writing on. I hope all goes well, but there some risks. Keep me in your prayers,
LAST SPRING
Hello Everyone,
I am writing to let you know that my mom is in the hospital in Des Moines. She remains in the ICU.
Sylvia was in Des Moines visiting her Aunt Helen who lives here on her way home to Wisconsin. She travelled to Texas in January to spend some time with Ryan and his family and to get out of the Wisconsin winter weather.
On the evening of Wednesday, February 28th, Helen drove Sylvia to the ER. Sylvia had been complaining of belly pain starting on the previous Saturday evening. After tests including a CT scan, Sylvia went into surgery for what the doctors suspected was a bowel obstruction. The doctors anticipated the surgery would last about an hour and fifteen minutes. Unfortunately, the doctors found that Sylvia's condition was quite severe, and her surgery lasted over three hours. The doctors removed a 12" section of her colon which had perforated and entangled with mesh from a former hernia repair, and a significant amount of her bowel contents had emptied into her abdominal cavity. Sylvia experienced severe septic shock, and remained on a ventilator until the following Sunday morning.
Sylvia's doctors are doing everything they can to help her heal. She is fighting hard, and she has her family with her now for support.
Sylvia's hospital visit for wound care revealed excellent progress. They anticipate that she will finish with the wound vacuum next week, and the hole is 87% closed with no tunnels. Happy doesn't cover it.
