Suzanne’s Story

Site created on December 9, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On Monday, December 2, Sue went Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC while in town visiting her son Chris.  She was admitted immediately and diagnosed with metastatic melanoma.  We are currently awaiting molecular level diagnosis of the melanoma which will determine the treatment path she will be put on.

Since many of you are not familiar with the background, I will add a bit more to Suzanne's story.

She had a melanoma excised from her left shoulder in May of 2009.  We went back to the Dr for 7 years, and were still showing no sign of reemergence of of the cancer.  She continued to see her dermatologist on a yearly basis, and as late as May of 2019, her latest visit, there was no sign of recurrence.

At the beginning of October we noticed that she had begun to feel weaker and we decided she needed physical therapy to improve her leg movement.
Since we were going to be in North Carolina for Thanksgiving and Christmas, that would be a good time to do it.  We arrive there on the Friday before Thanksgiving, and during that coming week she grew weaker to the point we took her in to urgent care the next Monday.  Her blood pressure at that point was 70 over 50, so they immediately moved her to Duke University Hospital, and over the period of the next week her vitals were stabilized and we got the metastatic melanoma diagnosis.

We now await our treatment plan!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Roy Aho

It was one year ago on this date that Suzanne, my high school sweetheart, wife of almost 50 years, my best friend and soulmate passed away.

I've debated for weeks on whether or not to post anything, but ultimately decided I needed to, not just to help with my own closure, but to thank all of you for your prayers, love, and support of myself and my family throughout this past year.

As a family we are doing okay.  As I write this, our immediate family has remained "covid free", a blessing in and of itself.   Obviously, we miss Sue greatly, but have reached a point where we can laugh as we remember "that's just what Mom did"!

Sue LOVED Christmas!  Her personality was one of giving and serving, so this was always a special season, one in which she thrived.   As we go through this time, we will enjoy remembering the many special things she did out of her love for all of us, and we will be thankful that we have our own special Christmas Angel watching over us!

Thank you all for the prayers, love and support you have given our family throughout this year.  We are truly grateful for each and every one of you!

With Love,

The Roy Aho Family
