Susan’s Story

Site created on October 3, 2019

This last month has been a whirlwind to say the least! I’ve decided to create this site as a way to provide information to friends and loved ones while still saving my emotional energy for this battle I am about to begin. I sure do appreciate all the love, prayers, messages, calls, and general outpouring of love but it has been challenging to respond to everyone and to repeat information that I am not sure I have truly processed. *Deep breath*
Last month, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. It’s an aggressive cancer that requires chemo, surgery, and radiation. Before I can start my treatment I had to get countless tests to make sure the cancer didn’t spread. It is my hope that this phase is finally complete and I will start chemotherapy in the next week.
I have chosen to receive treatments at Holy Redeemer and I feel confident in my team there. This is the most common form of breast cancer and the treatment plan is clear. After chemotherapy that will last for about 20 weeks, I will have surgery to remove my breast. This will be followed up with radiation.
I hope to provide everyone with updates throughout this process. I just want everyone to know how much I appreciate their support even if I don’t get back to them right away! Please know that all of you are giving me the strength I need to fight and beat this thing!!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Dana Peggs

Sorry for the delay! Mom and I are still getting our bearings in all this. Mom completed her second round of chemo. This is the A and the C for those that know about the chemo medications. The schedule right now is every other week for 8 weeks. They  call one of the medications “the red devil” (You think they would be a little more uplifting with these titles) and it is taking its toll. Mom’s energy is basically drained 2 days after the infusion. Last time she was back at work by Monday (after getting treatment on Wednesday) and we are hoping she can continue this schedule but it’s not clear yet. Mom is struggling with staying in bed and being the care receiver instead of the care giver! After the first treatment, her bloodwork looked good and the doctor saw some changes that he considers positive. The next hurdle appears to be the hair loss. Mom is not ready for this step but we are going to have to start preparing for the inevitable and buying some scarves! Mom is so lucky to have support and prayers from everyone. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
