Steve’s Story

Site created on June 8, 2021

In Preparation for knee surgery Steve was required to take a Covid test, he tested positive with very few, if any symptoms. I eventually tested positive as well. We both stayed healthy for about five or six days and then started getting cold like symptoms. On Saturday May 29th Steve took a turn for the worse. He required an ambulance and was brought to Amery Medical Center, where he stayed and seem to be maintaining, until Tuesday June 1st.  At that point his condition worsened and he was transported to Regions (in St. Paul, MN) hospital where he currently is in the ICU on a ventilator that we have named Woody.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support, we feel them!

Journal entry by Cheryl Volgren

It was a year ago that Steve started his journey, what a exciting year it’s been. We have learned so much and we are not in the fast lane anymore! As Steve puts it.... so grateful for every breath! We are enjoying the deck and watching the fields change from dirt to crops.
Steve is doing well, he knows when he has to stop and slow down. He was so excited Sunday as Jay and 3 grandsons fired up the Sawmill! Made his heart so happy. He goes to Respiratory Therapy 2x a week. That should be ending next week. His goal is to walk to the mailbox with no oxygen about 500 feet and do it faster each time.  He rides a stationary bike 2 miles a day, tries to keep oxygen and heart rate as low as possible but still push himself. He has resumed duties at home .... fix this and that! We have good light in the kitchen finally!
He does struggle with what we call ‘covid brain’! Can’t do two things at once, or sometimes forgets what he was going to say or do. Often times gives us a good laugh. We were able to go to Memorial Day Services at a couple cemeteries and take in The Legion Luncheon in Balsam Lake, which turned out to be very good for Steve, he was able to share part of his journey and how The Great God we have brought him through and see people we haven’t seen for what seems like forever.
We enjoy all the visitors we have and getting out and about. He is able to return to his Bible Studies and some social outings.
Thank you for your prayers and support along this journey!
