Steve’s Story

Update 3/7/2024: Steve is out of sedation and may be moved to rehab today.  His condition is stable.  Now, the long road ahead as the whole family adjusts to the new normal.
Update 2/27/24: The doctors may try to bring Steve out of sedation (slowly) today, first to see if he can breathe on his own, and then fully awake.  It may take a little while.
Update 2/26/24:  Steve is in critical condition, but stable.  The surgery went well and he will be sedated a few more days.

2/25/24: Friends and Family—

On behalf of Lori and the boys we are writing to let you know that Steve was in a single car accident last night.  He is ok, but in critical condition.

Right now, he is in surgery.  The crash crushed his legs and they will have to amputate both of his legs below the knee.

We will let you know when he is out of surgery and in recovery.  Lori and the boys are, of course, upset and overwhelmed.  Please send your affirmations for his recovery.  She may not be able to answer calls and texts but surely appreciates your thoughts for Steve and their family.

Updates to follow.

Journal entry by Ethne Denham

Good evening everyone!  Greetings and welcome back for your weekly Steven update!

Steve is doing quite well!  No spooky eclipse-related side-effects detected.  As a matter of fact, the boys had the day off of school, so Lori took them to court with her and they met her judge (!), and then popped outside to see the total eclipse visible in Little Rock.  She sent us some pictures - so cool!

Steve and Lori enjoyed the visit of some of their favorite former Jamestown College students-turned-friends as they were passing through town.  Elizabeth Phares and Will Oren stayed with Lori and the boys on Sunday night and they all went up to visit Steve too!  They brought along some Jimmie gear and white sauce from Spicy Pie!

Steve’s recovery is forward-ho, no set-backs this week.  He can get in and out of the wheelchair to the toilet and shower seat (or other similar seating) using a slide board (my wording not the official term).  And, they are anticipating a discharge date of 4/25 if all progresses well!!  This is exciting and scary at the same time—READY SET GO, right?  Hopefully no more IV or antibiotics or any other medicines needed (presumably the need for those could factor into the timing of him leaving.)

Steve will still have work to do.  His right leg has the ampushield on it still but is looking positive for being well suited for a prosthesis.  His left leg is still healing, but more slowly.  No ampushield yet.

Lori told me Steve is waiting to shave until he gets sprung from rehab, in case you were wondering about the beard he has going these days!

In other delightful news, Casper has now graduated to a Tiger in Scouts!  Way to go Casper!  Seems like just yesterday I was visiting him at the NICU in Fargo.

Have a nice week everyone, ‘til next time!
