Old lungs on the right and new donor lungs on the left. The primary surgeon, Dr. Bremner (who started the transplant program at St. Joseph's Hospital 12 years ago), said that Steve's right lobe was black and looked very bad and the left lobe was pink which shows stress and deterioration. The donor lungs are white and healthy. The doctor felt strongly that at the rate of deterioration, Steve may not have made it had we stayed in Utah to wait another four to six months for a transplant. We had the same feeling.
