Steve’s Story

Site created on March 14, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.   Anyone that knows Steve knows he is a pretty healthy guy and is rarely sick.  Last week on Thursdsay he was complaining of being crazy cold with body aches and thought he was coming down with influenza.  He spiked a temp that night., but that’s normal with the flu.  He literally slept for 3 days, only getting up to come downstairs for an hour or so or to use the bathroom.   On Sunday night I noticed he was becoming more disoriented and unsteady on his feet; but figured since he hadn’t eaten anything he was probably pretty weak.  On Monday 3/11/19 , I brought him to the Mankato ER after my Grandpa’s visitation when his fever was still over 101 and he wasn’t making much sense.  The ED staff were great!  I was absolutely NOT thinking sepsis... both Steve and I figured he would go in, be positive for influenza or strep, get fluids and a prescription and and be on our way.  Eight hours later he was admitted to the ICU with septic shock and multiple organ dysfunction/acute failure.  Had we waited any longer, I was told he would have declined rapidly and not been able to recover.  In short, he would have been dead the next day.  God works mysteriously for sure!
Steve has a long road ahead of him but we are confident he will make a full recovery.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.  I will update this page as often as I get updates.  Your prayers are appreciated!!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Lori Larson

Steve has been home for just over a week and continues to improve a bit every day.  He is still having to go to dialysis 3 times a week but we are hopeful that this week will be the last one as his kidney function continues to improve.  His appetite is coming back also which is SO great to see!  After 3 weeks in the hospital, 2 of those in ICU, he has lost a significant amount of weight and muscle mass. (like over 30 pounds!) He needs to be reminded that he is still recovering and to not overdo it.....which he did yesterday and his body let him know it.  I gave him strict "Lay Low" orders today, so he just went for a brief walk down the block, and for a guy that runs 26.2 MILES for freaking fun you can imagine how unsatisfying that is.
Day by day, little by little, he will get there, I have absolute confidence in that.  The other thing after a life changing event like this, is the realization he has to come to terms with that he came VERY close to death...within hours actually if I am being honest.  The doctors STILL do not know what caused all of this in the first place. The MAYO FREAKING CLINIC...BEST in the WORLD can't find a cause.... That is damn terrifying let me tell you.  I want Dr. House damnit! He'd figure it out for sure!
Thank you for your positive vibes, healing thoughts and prayers.  I am forever grateful to you all.
