Newest Update

Journal entry by Carol Johnson

Two months ago, today, on Easter Sunday, we called the ambulance for Steve.  He had been diagnosed with Covid earlier that week and had been sick for a week prior to being tested. He was very weak,, hadn't eaten any food or drank any liquids for several days, his oxygen levels were low and he was having trouble breathing. We were very scared and devastated to let the paramedics take him away.  We knew with the No Visitor policy for Covid patients it was uncertain when we would see him again.  Valissa came to be with me and we  began to get the calls from the ER staff reporting that he had double Covid pneumonia, dehydration, renal and respiratory distress.  They said they would be admitting him.  The next 8 days were a blur with news that he had a Covid induced stroke, had inflammation of the lining of his brain (encephalopathy), delirium, and dysphasia (trouble swallowing and garbled speech). There was no way to know what his recovery or hospitalization time would be, as every Covid case is different.

After the ninth day he began to recover and  was moved off the ICU unit .  He no longer needed to be on the BiPAP breathing machine, but still needed oxygen.  They started speech, physical, and occupational therapy several times a day and we could finally talk to him on the phone.  That was a glorious day! The next day they spoke to me about moving him to another facility to begin a rehab program.  I talked to Valissa, Megan and Luke, and we decided he would do better being at home with us.  I got to pick him up on Thursday, April 15th.  I was taken aback at how thin and weak he was, but still so happy to see him!  He has been home 7 weeks now and has made an amazing and miraculous recovery!  He has returned to his apartment property jobs and is working a few hours a day at  school  through the rest of the academic year.  We are extremely grateful and thankful to all of you and to our God for his recovery!  Hope you all have a restful and peaceful summer!!
