Newest Update

Journal entry by Lauren Garcia

It’s been awhile since I’ve given an update on Sophia. We have been busy over here with tons of therapies and appointments. Seems like I could benefit from a full time secretary just lining these all out.  Anyway, below is the latest in a readers digest version. For those that have continued pray, thank you so much. It’s been really hard on our entire family and reveals itself in different ways.  At the same time it’s been amazing to see God so faithfully continuing to allow this girl to progress like she has.
So much progress has been made. However a long way to go. She’s minimally verbal, right side affected so not using right hand at all. She sees double vision but navigates that pretty well, hearing loss and wears hearing aids. Does great with this and doesn’t seem to be severe enough to effect things. The biggest challenge currently is, she’s taken a step back with her walking she still primarily uses the wheelchair but can walk around the house some. . She has developed some contractures in her right foot causing it to lock up. This in turn has caused her to roll her ankle whenever she walks. If she does not have a leg and foot brace on her ankle will roll. The AFO ( brace) is not comfortable and can only be worn a few hours at a time currently so we really have to watch her because she tries to walk and then either rolls the ankle again, causing more damage or literally falls. I constantly have to have my eyes on her and be close by if she does not have those braces on. Second need is her emotional regulation. Frontal lobe damage can cause that. Thankfully she is not aggressive at all but she does cry and get impatient a lot. We are currently discovering that part of this may be that she is in some pain. She does not verbalize pain like we do and sometimes I do not think she even understands where it’s coming from. She literally had a fractured tibia and we didn’t even know it.   The emotions are the hardest for me to navigate because I’m exhausted and don’t get many breaks to recharge myself . Seems like they flair up about once a month for about 3-5 days so we are also thinking this could be hormones. She’s in full blown puberty, another effect of the brain damage. But with all that being said she is so brilliant and cognitively aware and fun loving and a joy, making strides and willing to keep trying and work hard. A true walking miracle and so many stories proving the Hand of God is working in her life and in ours. We are so blessed!!
