Newest Update

Journal entry by amy kappen

Friday, April 12, 2019 - Let me begin with the good news, as I’d much rather focus on the positive impact you all continue to help me make in Sophia’s memory.  We exceeded $5,000!!! Sophia will receive a paver stone at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. THANK YOU!!!

In addition to Sophia, the other young girl, Kayleigh, who the other paver stone is for, passed away this week on April 10th. That was the date of Sophia’s funeral and ironically I was watching the video of Sophia's funeral service when sweet Kayleigh earned her wings. I knew April 10th was a date that had no significance to anyone else but us. People know birthdays, diagnosis days, death anniversaries, but who remembers dates of a funeral. Parents do.

I was in a funk all day, feeling down. And then I wanted to remember how we celebrated Sophia’s life. I needed to feel her close to me, as close as I could. I held Kayleigh’s family close in my heart this past week as I knew they were approaching this stage. Hoping they too, find the right words to honor their girl in the way their family chooses to.

Even though I cried through the video, I loved being reminded of how Sophia lived life. Reminding me to keep things in perspective. Reminding me to be better.

Please pray, hope or lift Kayleigh’s family up (whatever your beliefs may be) with strength and love as they privately lay their beautiful daughter to rest next week. I pray there’s a special place in Heaven for our children, for they are like no other.

Now some bad news (in a relative sense), because nothing compares to yet another child gaining wings from pediatric cancer.

Unfortunately, some of the donations (including mine) did not get processed through the website link correctly. When I received the weekly donation report today, I knew we were missing a number of names of people who had sent messages of donations being made. I’ve been in contact with the fundraising team, but they don’t know why the website didn’t process the donation without alerting the person making the donation.

If you did not receive an email immediately or a charge on your credit card, the donation did not process. I will send private messages to those I’m aware of missing. And I’m so sorry to ask, but if you did make a donation but didn’t see a charge or an email, would you please mind resubmitting?  Please know, I resubmitted mine today and verified it did work. I apologize for this huge inconvenience.

Thank you to all who made a positive impact on another anniversary I dreaded.

If anyone is interested in watching, I thought I'd post the video link for Sophia’s funeral services  below. It was good to hear all the great things Sophia did in her short yet impactful life. She is still an amazing little girl and I love how Greg and I honored her life even if it wasn’t others’ style, it was “Team Kappen style.”
