Journal entry by Dayna McDonald —
Hi y’all, been a while since I’ve updated here and realized we never shared what we learned about that fatal night. 2 years ago today, Riley was hanging out with his buds in his first week at Purdue as a freshman when he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Thankfully, his buddy and flat mate Tommy began CPR to resuscitate Riley successfully until EMS arrived when he flat lined 3 more times en route to the hospital in West Lafayette. You know the story.
After bringing him home finally in October 2021, many tests later we were told that he has CPVT, a genetic heart defect. Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is an inherited cardiac condition that causes sudden rhythm disturbances, called arrhythmias, in otherwise healthy children (from Google, because I couldn’t type out the real name lol). He is closely monitored with his ICD implant and goes for check ups routinely. Today he still has minor motor functions he is still working through, but we are so happy to say that Riley is in his junior year back at Purdue, back to doing his daily workouts and doing what every 20 year old should do, HAVE FUN!
We are so thankful for the life saving efforts of the EMS, doctors and nurses in West Lafayette and Chicago hospitals. Because of you, Riley is here today 🙏🏻 ❤️ here’s to a lifetime of accomplishments to come for Riley ❤️ also thank you to everyone for the constant prayers and wishes ❤️
