Sid Lasswell

May 21, 1924 — February 24, 2019

Sidney Smith Lasswell was born in Eugene, Oregon, on May 21, 1924.

After graduating from Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, in 1941, he attended his freshman year at Oregon State University in 1941-42. He then entered the Army and, during World War II, spent over 2.5 years, from 1943 to 1946, serving in the South Pacific as a master sergeant in the Combat Corp of Engineers. He served in New Caledonia, the New Hebrides, and the campaigns in the Solomon Islands and Okinawa; and he was stationed the last 6 months in Soul, Korea. 

He returned to Oregon State University in 1946 and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering with a water/wastewater treatment major on June 8, 1949.

While at OSU, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and served 25 years on the Building Associations.

Mr. Lasswell joined Cornell, Howland, Hayes, and Merryfield Consulting Engineers as employee 11 and was elected one of its original 12 partners in 1961 before the company incorporated as CH2M in 1966. As a senior vice president, he served as firmwide Director of Technology for 14 years and as Corvallis regional manager for 15 years. He also served four terms on the CH2M HILL Board of Directors. Mr. Lasswell retired as a shareholder in 1990, but continued working for CH2M HILL as a senior project manager until 1996. He was a registered engineer in the states of Oregon, California, Colorado, Illinois, and Virginia. He served as president of the Consulting Engineers Council of Oregon in 1971-72.

Mr. Lasswell was a diplomat in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, was named 1989 Engineer of the Year by Professional Engineers of Oregon, and the 1987 Business Associate of the year by the American Business Women’s Association. He is in the Engineering Hall of Fame at Oregon State University.

Active in local business and civic activities, he served on the Board of the Bank of Corvallis from 1982-1987. He served in a variety of chairman positions for the United Way. He received the John Stotsenberg Volunteer of the year award in 1994. He also served as a vice chairman for the Boys and Girls Club fund-raising campaign. He served on the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Board for several terms.

Mr. Lasswell was chairman of the successful 1990-92 capital campaign for Old Mill Center for Children and Families and served on the Board for many years, and as Board Chairman. He continued on the Board until the present.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary E. (Pat) Murphy Lasswell. 

He is survived by his wife, Florence E. (Judy) Lasswell; by his children, Linda, Donna, Scott, and Mark; by his stepchildren, Dave and Steve Johnson; by 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22 at the Oregon State CH2M HILL Alumni Center. Please bring stories and memories to share.  If you cannot attend, please share your thoughts and memories through the CaringBridge.com website.
