Sherry’s Surgery

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, November 23, Sherry was given some scary news from her orthopedic surgeon. Her C4 & C5 vertebrae are not aligned, her C4 is 50% ahead of her C5, and it’s progressing. Faced with the options of surgery, paralysis or death she chose surgery.

Her surgery is scheduled for 11:45 am on Thursday, December 2, at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, MD. Dr. Blam is her surgeon. The hope is that after one or two days in the hospital, she will be coming home. Dr. Blam prefers to send her home hoping that she will move more than she would have had the opportunity to in a nursing home.

Recovery is expected to take about six weeks and she will have to wear a cervical collar.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Sherry Beaty

Sorry it has taken so long to update, but at least it’s good news to report! Sherry has moved back upstairs to her own bedroom, which means she can walk up and down stairs. She’s only doing it once a day and spending her day on the ground floor.

Sherry had excellent follow-up appointments with her orthopedic  surgeon and her cardiologist. Both think she is doing really well. Her surgeon wants her to go for a half-hour a day without the collar, to help strengthen the muscles in her neck. She can also bend some now, which means that she has much more personal autonomy.

Sherry had a great Christmas with lots of family around. All of her grandkids and her children were in town for the Christmas holiday.
Hope you had a wonderful holiday season and have a blessed new year!
