John’s Story

Site created on November 2, 2019

Dearest Friends and Family,

We learned about this site back when John was working with the Stanford Children's Hospital, and years later we now find we are in need  of such a site to keep family and friends updated. We greatly appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Please NO tributes or donations of any kind - your thoughts and prayers and letters of love and support are more than enough! Mom will of course read and appreciate your comments here on this site, as well as any and all snail mail letters as it will allow her to put to use all of her beautiful stationary.  Family and friends near and far are welcome to come for a visit, a chat, a cup of tea...if you'd like to bring a happy, you can tote along a bunch of happy flowers or healthy food. Thank you a million times over.

Kindly,

John, Sherrie, Mollie & Liza

Newest Update

Journal entry by Liza Binkley

Dearest friends who have supported our family throughout these past four years, to immediately follow the passing of our beloved father with the holiday season that is supposed to be so full of family and merriment and new years looking at a hopeful year ahead, well, it’s been an especially challenging past two months to be sure. We were grateful to our family friends and to Uncle Nick, Sam & Zoelle for welcoming us in to join them for the holidays. We are in mourning, and the loss of both our mom and dad in such a short period of time feels like losing two of our most important organs. I felt as if my heart stopped when my sweet mama passed and now as if my lungs can no longer breathe without my father. And yet I realize, in this very moment, that it is thanks to their deep love for all of these years and the profound support from all of you that we can move forward through the valley, slowly, thoughtfully, one day at a time, sometimes minute by minute hour by hour.

With that resiliency, my sister and I were able to take on the tall task of writing our father’s obituary which we are proud to share with you in what was just published in the San Antonio Express News:
https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/sanantonio/name/john-binkley-obituary?id=54024654

We welcome y'all to join us for the celebration of our father’s life on what would have been his 81st birthday on January 27th here in San Antonio at the Church of Reconciliation with a reception to follow. We aim for it to be a true celebration full of music and stories in John Binkley fashion.

If you are unable to join in person, we will be livestreaming the service here:  https://vimeo.com/event/3997327

In lieu of flowers and to honor our father, we collaborated with the oncologists at Stanford Children's Hospital to ensure that all donations go directly to support young cancer patients who benefit from the Child Life and Creative Arts Department at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford, a program that our father took such pride in playing a part.
