Newest Update

Journal entry by Lacie Hicks

First, I want to apologize for all the callbacks I have not made. I know I speak for our entire family when I  say I appreciate you reaching out so much and it has given us such comfort during this time. Early on in this process communication flowed easily, even amongst the inner circle. We would call, text, marco polo message, etc. frequently during the day...but as time goes on, fatigue sets in, and words dry up. We love you all so much and we know that the most critical communication is still happening in abundance...the prayers going up for Sheri.

So my last post was about the amazing news we got last Friday. And while that news IS STILL amazing, life is a roller coaster and we quickly hit a low in this journey.

Victor, Sheri, Mykanna, and Cydnie set off Friday to move my parents back home to Leonard. They were about an hour into their trip home when a routine bathroom break at Bucky's went very wrong. My mom had one of her wound drains in her neck come out and so it was back to MD Anderson in the Woodlands. There was no way to put the drain back in, so my dad had to learn how to pack the wound. They ended up staying Friday night in Huntsville and not getting home until 3:30 pm on Saturday.

I went to the house early on Saturday to get it ready for my parents and then Cydnie and Mykanna unpacked and organized all the medical stuff Saturday evening. Cydnie flew out Sunday morning and I was planning to spend Sunday afternoon with my parents finishing up the laundry. I got home from church on Sunday and got the most terrifying call of my life.  My dad said my mom was bleeding profusely from her mouth and that the ambulance just got there. They took her to McKinney and then Sunday night she was taken by ambulance back to MD Anderson. Hoss drove my dad, following the ambulance and they arrived at MDA at 3:30 am.

Monday at around 10:00 am she had her third surgery. They said there was a spot in the very back of her mouth where saliva was pooling, this caused the sutures to prematurely dissolve and that is what caused the bleed. They also found another blood clot and they found an abscess. They repaired the "pooling area" with tissue from her pectoral muscle, I don't know what they are doing about the clot, and they removed and cleaned the abscess and they are starting antibiotics.

After her surgery on Monday, she was put in ICU. They removed the ventilator this morning and this afternoon we got a video of her awake and blowing us kisses.

The doctor told my dad this wasn't exactly a setback, but more of a hiccup. It was one heck of a hiccup.

After processing these events it is so easy to see the things that went wrong, but God has highlighted for me a few things that HE DID.

-She is TECHNICALLY CANCER FREE!

-She didn't die. I don't mean this casually, there was A LOT OF BLOOD. He protected her, he stopped the bleeding.

-They found and cleaned and can directly treat the abscess.

-Mykanna had just unpacked them...so she knew exactly what to pack back up.

-Hoss Pratt showing up HERO STYLE to drive my dad to Houston, leaving at McKinney at 10 pm.

-My dad was not allowed into the hospital initially, which allowed him to see a doctor for skin issues Monday morning.

Also, just looking over the whole time period, the theme has been "bring to this what you have." Whether that is time or money or food or logistics or whatever. So many people have given what they have and everything has been covered.

We may not be as communicative and cheerleader-y as we were at the start, but we are just as determined to see her through. We know God holds her, and us, in the palm of HIS hand. Only HE knows the days we have on this earth. We trust HIM completely and HE gives to us generously.

Please pray for:

-CONTINUED HEALING

-NO MORE HICCUPS, AND

-NO RADIATION.
