In loving memory. June 5, 1929 - December 18, 2017

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

SHELDON'S STORY
Sheldon had a rough couple of months in late 2017.  Back in July, there was the fall. A quick surgery to repair a broken hip spun off a series of rehab/physical therapy sessions and complications. Infections, pneumonia, shingles, and... hurricanes came and went. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia complicated his recovery and weakened his resistance.  After being under control for 10+ years, his blood struggled to fight the severe re-occurring pneumonia and infections. On December 18th, 2017 we moved him to hospice, and he died peacefully that evening while surrounded by family and friends.

THANK YOU
Our family (and especially Sharon) is so grateful for all of you who supported him with calls, notes, prayers, and visits during the ups and downs of the year. We apologize that we were not able to connect earlier with more of you who loved him well, but we were hopeful for the potential of recovery throughout and needed to guard his energy and exposure.

(Updated: 3/15/18)
We are still waiting to complete processing at Arlington Cemetary. We have unofficially been told to expect a date in September or October, but nothing is in writing yet. Please leave a note in the guestbook, or on a post. We appreciate hearing everyone's stories and memories. Thank you!

(Updated 12/29/17)  Cards and small flowers can be sent to the family at:  7374 Kahana Drive, Boynton Beach, FL 33437. We are awaiting the military scheduling office to arrange a memorial and burial service at Arlington National Cemetary in Virginia. It may take several weeks to get a specific date and time for the service since many of the offices have been closed for Christmas and New Years.  Information will be posted here on the site as soon as arrangements are in place.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Melissa Westervelt

We are relieved and deeply grateful to let everyone know that services have been scheduled for Arlington National Cemetary at 9:00 am on Tuesday, March 26th. Though his spirit has gone on to be with Jesus for almost a year, we will gather to return his body to the Earth and celebrate the many ways that we are all still living with so many happy memories.

You are all invited to join us, but we know that this is a weekday and fully understand that it is not manageable for everyone. Please let us know if you are considering joining us in March so that we can make arrangements for the correct number of guests, and also pass along some instructions for arrival and the order of the services. Check in at Arlington will be around 8:15 and the service itself will last until about 10:00. We will then move to another location to enjoy brunch together.

You can email Sharon or Melissa directly at melissawestervelt@gmail.com if you are able to join us for celebration and honors.

Thank you to everyone for loving us well this year.

Melissa
