Shannon’s Story

Site created on October 16, 2020

Welcome to Shan's Fam website!! Because this support network includes so many loved ones of Shannon's, we are using this site to keep everyone updated  on her journey in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement - please take a look around, check the Ways to Help and Planner sections to lend your support & stay informed.  You can post your own words of encouragement in the Well Wishes section.

Shannon was diagnosed with triple-negative, stage 2 breast cancer following an ultrasound & biopsy she received in late September, 2020.   Triple negative breast cancer is cancer that tests negative for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and excess HER2 protein.  These results mean the growth of the cancer is not fueled by the hormones estrogen and progesterone, or by the HER2 protein. So, triple-negative breast cancer does not respond to hormonal therapy medicines or medicines that target HER2 protein receptors. Still, other medicines are used to successfully treat triple-negative breast cancer.  About 10-20% of breast cancers are triple-negative breast cancers.  Click here for more information on triple-negative breast cancer: https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/diagnosis/trip_neg.

There are several factors used in determining the stage of cancer & in Shannon's case, hers is categorized as stage 2 because the tumor is larger than 2 cm but not larger than 5 cm and has not spread to the axillary lymph nodes. Click here for more information on stages: https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/diagnosis/staging.

The standard treatment recommended is 16-24 weeks of chemotherapy and then surgery to remove any part of the tumor that wasn’t killed off during chemo. The best news is that there is a 90%++ survival rate!

We know Shannon can beat this, but she has a long road ahead - she couldn't do it without all of your support so THANK YOU!!!

Journal entry by Shannon Williams

Hi fam,

Tomorrow is a BIG milestone for me. I will have my chemo port removed from my chest. The port has been my trusted ally through my cancer journey. I will also have what I am hoping is my last breast reconstruction surgery tomorrow. When I was diagnosed on October 1st 2020, the Dr told me it would take one year to get through it all. I was determined to be done sooner, and it looks like when I am done recovering from this surgery I will be about two weeks shy of one year. I wouldn’t change one thing about this past year. This challenge has changed me in so many ways and I have learned so much. I have found the beauty in the lesson for sure. I also know that I wouldn’t be where I am without the support and love of everyone. I know how lucky I am.

I will have my first 6 month check up in September to make sure all my levels show no indication of cancer. I feel good and I am confident everything will come back ok.

I am also excited to share that I am going to start a new career chapter as well! On September 13th I will join Hunkapi Farm as  the Executive Assistant to the Director. Hunkapi has 22 horses and they provide equine therapy to all of those in need. Check it out: www.hunkapi.org.
The farm also has a lot of other animals and a community garden! I cannot wait to get started making a difference while working in nature. My biggest daily stress will be which pig, dog, donkey, or horse to hug first! 😂 I am hitting all of you up to join in the first event I will be helping with on Oct 30th. The Open Your Heart Gala! Please buy tickets so I can see you all and the money raised goes to a cause close to my heart. Purchase tickets here: https://bit.ly/OpenYourHeartGala
Thank you for all of your love and prayers! They really do work.
Love,
Shan
