Journal entry by Shadina Blunt

I am all scheduled for surgery later this month for a double mastectomy. I am working on being mentally prepared for this major surgery.
I have visited both surgeons that will work on my case and asked as many questions as I can think of and they have shared as much knowledge as they have about the plan as they can.
I have been asked why I am opting for a double mastectomy when only one breast is affected….. well I don’t plan on revisiting breast cancer ever again and getting rid of both of them gives me a higher chance of success. Getting my life back means more to me than trying to salvage my breast. I feel better about that than trying to save my 38 year old breast that have nursed all the babies that it will ever nurse. These breast have done well now it is time for them to be put to rest.
The breast specialist also shared they will put dye in my lymph nodes during surgery and if any of them light up they will remove them as well. I am fascinated learning how they do everything in this process.
I am also opting for reconstructive surgery and allow the reconstructive surgeon to build me new breast. I believe that will make me feel more comfortable in the long run. I have gotten mixed responses on that as well, but I’m going with what makes me happy. Me making me happy is very important in this whole process.
Weather or not I get to keep my own nipples will be determined once I’m in surgery based off of blood flow to that area and if the cancer has affected that area, but if those can’t be saved I’m ok with canning them as well and prefer not to keep them. Whatever will keep me the healthiest.
I am not scared or fearful about the surgery as I know God as already confirmed success. I just want to be prepared mentally for what is to come afterwards. The changes to my body visually, The post op pain, the recovery period, the help I will need. I am in prayer mode already and know that everything will be just fine. 💕
