Seth’s Story

Site created on June 7, 2021

Seth was admitted in early May with complications from Covid 19.  At this time, he is on a ventilator through a tracheostomy.  He is also sedated.  He was placed on ECMO for about 2 weeks but since has been taken off that.  He is still in very critical condition.  Please keep the Hendershot Family in your prayers and please pray for a complete healing of Seth’s lungs.   Also please keep Melissa and Hunter in your thoughts and prayers as the void from Seth being in the hospital is really taking a toll on both of them.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kari Cotton

Dear Jesus, Thank you for being patient and loving with all of us!  I want to pray for those who have recently lost a loved one.  I continue to pray that they all turn to you and that you give them such a peace, comfort and joy that there is no denying it it from you!  I pray that we all turn to you for strength and that we stay weak!  I pray for all of us to die to self and do your will dear Lord!  I pray for those that don't know you to seek you and find you.  I pray for those that say they believe in you (but your scripture says even the demons believed) but don't follow you!  I pray for all governing authorities....for you know exactly what each one needs, so I pray you give them exactly what they need along with your wisdom!  I pray for continued healing for Seth and anyone else recovering as well.  Thank you again for all that you do!  Without you I am nothing dear Lord!  It's in your precious name I pray Jesus, Amen!  Well lots of wonderful news, progress, and updates, and apologies that I've been trying to find the time update.  Also sorry it's late but for some reason it's the only time I get to sit down!  Seth seen his PCP (dr.) on Thursday.  He is pleased at how well he is doing, wants to continue to decrease his medications (slowly and where it's applicable), he has been weaning his need from his roho cushion (when there is a cushioned seat to sit on).  Healed Wounds seem to be tolerating okay.  We Keep watching it closely to make sure nothing opens back up.  He hasn't needed insulin all month and is sugar levels have been 130 at highest.  His BP and HR are much lower.  He hasn't needed his low pressor (BP lowering medicine) very often. He said he has maybe needed 8-10 doses all month (he's prescribed 3 doses a day if needed).  From a PT stand point they are focusing on strengthening and balance activities only.  Which is sad that they haven't addressed his severely decreased ROM and flexibility.  So I prayed and asked Jesus to give me the strength and time to address this at home.  Jesus has answered those prayers and I've been able to work on him for 1-2hrs daily to address every deficit.  I'm so grateful that I have a degree in this area!  It has been so rewarding, exhausting, fatiguing, kicks my butt (but teaches me to lean into Jesus more to get through)!  In just a few short weeks I have been able to increase ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, neck, wrist, spine, sacrum, scapular, ROM (range of motion, and joint mobility) as well as restoring flexibility in some crazy tight muscles (just about every muscle is tight). My heart just breaks for those that don't have this knowledge or ability to help their loved ones!  Just about every health care facility is short staffed which affects patient care.  Prayers for all of them as well,  I know it can't be easy on them to just not have the time to see patients or to give them the care they need.  Truly breaks my heart!  Seth has been walking further and has increased endurance.  He can stand for about 10-20
minutes.  He stood for entire worship at church today (5 songs).  His overall function is about at 50%.  He is now a little stronger than me again ❤️!  He has been able to throw a baseball maybe 10reps (max) and about 15 feet.  It hurts his shoulder a little bit think that's due to the lack of ROM and flexibility in shoulder.  He also still has significant neuropathy and myopathy in his right foot.  We purchased a home NMES unit this week so I can try to get some response from his right foot (most impaired is his great toe extensor).  Can't get a muscle contraction yet but I feel that it is going to help awaken somethings up.  Prayers for increased function in his Right foot. We also went to Ramseyer Farms and he wanted to see if he could walk on the tires and balance and he did pretty well (just needed me to help him get up and stood close by incase I was needed) We climbed probably 20 steps to go down the big slide together, he lassoed a fake bull with Hunter, and we did the teeter totter together 😂 and went on a hayride.  (I'll post pictures and videos to my fb page).  He was joking around a few weeks ago and did a light jog away from Hunter.  He made it about 8-10 feet and sucked wind for several minutes after but it was cool to see and Hunter just loved it and thought it was the greatest thing ever!  Then on Friday we had the opportunity to renew our marriage vows and share our testimonies of what Jesus has done from a marriage stand point.  Pastor Ken gave a beautiful sermon on marriage, Seth and I spoke and we got to renew our vows.  If ya want check it out go to our churches fb page....Really Recovered and look for 10-29 Seth and Melissa.  I'm definitely not a speaker but couldn't pass up an opportunity to give some praise and glory to The King! ❤️❤️ Seth has some upcoming appointments this week in Cleveland.  Please be in prayer that we see continued progress in his lungs.  He will be doing some chest X-rays, more pulmonary function tests, and meet with pulmonologist and respiratory drs.  Praise the Lord that my CT of lungs showed no damage, and mass was no longer present near my heart, 1st mammogram results was good, vision has changed, needed new glasses/prescription. Eyes are not tolerating new glasses well and I'm getting nauseous and migraines. They switched my glasses from a progressive lens to a far sided lens only and need a different pair reading glasses for anything close up.  Well I can't tolerate those so I'm just reading without glasses I guess.  😂. Prayers appreciated there.  I think they might refer me to an ophthalmologist.  Hunter had another eye exam and his eyes are doing good and he doesn't need a new prescription.  Seth had a sleep study done and the results were a little concerning.  We are going to address this further at his visit this week with the pulmonologist.  They said he had mild sleep apnea, his oxygen levels were dropping pretty low (so they had me increase his oxygen from 1 L to 2 L for at home when he sleeps until he gets a CPAP I would guess) He has restless leg syndrome and he is also presenting with high CO2 levels (this is probably the most concerning). We know from the last PFTs (pulmonary function test and imagining) that his lungs are functioning at around 60-65%, and he has permanent and irreversible lung damage in his right lung (emphysema) from the MRSA pneumonia.  This is where he is more prone to getting pneumothorax (lung collapsing).  We just keep praying that Jesus continues to do miracles, and work in and through us!  Seth asked me what the Drs said about if he survived.  I told him that they said if you made it out of the hospital, that he would be in and out of the hospital for the next year.  They said his chance of survival the first year would be slim to none.  The nurse said she had only personally seen one person survive in Seth's condition and he only survived the next year by a lung transplant.  It just goes to show how much of a miracle Seth is and on how many levels!!!!We are forever grateful to The Lord and Creator!  It's apparent that Jesus has a purpose for him here on earth and prayers that we keep our focus up and our foundation in Christ unshakeable, so we can best Carry out His will and plans for us!  I keep hearing Revelation 4:8 again: (NLT) Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the  almighty- the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come! 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻.   Prayers for the upcoming and last year of schooling for Seth to become a licensed Pastor (God willing).  Seth met with his employer last week to go over insurance benefits and it was nice for Seth to get to see all of them, and thank them all again for how amazing and supportive they have been.  Since it has been over 5 months out of work with no known date of return yet. (All healthcare providers keep asking him what he has to do to return to work...he tells them he has to be able to climb vertical ladders on tanks up to 65 feet high.....and each response is always a .....Ohhhhhh! He has to apply for social security disability.  So prayers that Jesus works all of that out as well!  Thank you all for the continued prayers, love and support!  We are so grateful to have such a wonderful support group, and some amazing Churches and prayer warriors that continue to assist us!  We are so overwhelmed with joy and gratitude with the love, unity, and the power of prayer that so many of you have shown!  Have a blessed week and remember we love all of you, but more importantly JESUS LOVES YOU!!!!
