Secilio (Sam) R. Gomez was born in San Antonio on January 7th, 1947. He graduated from Brackenridge H.S. in 1964. Upon graduation, Secilio joined the United State Marines Corps as a marine rifleman. Upon completion of boot camp and school of infantry, he was soon deployed for Vietnam. During his eight years of enlistment, he completed four tours in Vietnam. On his third tour, he was captured and was listed a prisoner of war and was claimed missing in action for three months. His awards included but not limited to: Navy Achievement medal w/ Combat “V:, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation w/ ribbon bar, bronze star, meritorious unit commendation w/ ribbon bar, purple heart, good conduct medal, national defense service medal, Vietnam service medal w/ 4 stars, republic of Vietnam meritorious unit citation gallantry cross color, republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit citation Civil Actions Color (First Class), and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Secilio was attached to 3rd Marine Battalion, 7th Marine and 1st Marine Division, FMF. In 1975, he enlisted in the National Guard as a reservist and simultaneously attended St. Phillips college to become a machine operator. After completion of his associates, he was accepted and attended Southwest State University-San Marcos to become an Industrial engineer.
On May 11th, 1978 Sam married Mary Lou Gomez. Sam is a loving husband of forty years, protector, good provider, a man of strong faith, positive thinker, innovator and most importantly a comedian. He enjoyed remaining active and would participate in many sport leagues while working at Kelly A.F.B. He enjoyed playing basketball, baseball, reading, eating everything (he loved food), watching western movies, sharing his knowledge on life and history. As a father, he was actively involved with his daughters’ extra-curricular activities in the band. He became President of the Band Boosters, President of Northside District stadiums, and was his daughters biggest supporter.
On April 1981, He received Christ as his lord and savior. While attending Cornerstone church, he assisted with security, ushering, participated in choir, and became assistant home minister. After twenty years at Cornerstone, his family decided to attend church services closer to home. In 2002, Sam and his wife attended Westover Hills Assembly of God. He actively became involved in greeting church attendees, ushering, group ministry leader, and divorce care
Sam was a big advocate for equal rights and equal pay for government employees. He assisted many people who experienced any wrongful actions. While attending Our Lady of the Lake University to receive his 2nd degree, he helped build the Student Veterans of America for the college and became the first president to run the program.
