Journal entry by Sarah Sumrall

On July 8, I was hit from behind by another vehicle and hit my right eye on the steering wheel (I got a nice, big black eye). With persistent irritation still a month later, my doctor ordered an MRI of my head and neck. This MRI revealed a 2cmX2cm mass on my brain.
We went to the neurosurgeon today and he narrowed down the diagnosis to either an epidermoid cyst in the brain or a meningioma benign tumor but they can’t determine the specific type of malformation without surgery.  In both cases the mass/cyst could bleed again or rupture and will continue to grow so he recommends we take it out. We scheduled the surgery for November 14th at Medical City Plano pending the mass doesn’t change or rupture before then. I will be in the ICU initially for 24 hours and then if all goes well I will move to the hospital floor for 2-3 more days and then hopefully get to go home for the rest of the recovery (2-4 weeks). Surgery Risks could be seizure, bleeds, or stroke but all are only at a 1-2% chance.  We are processing the news of brain surgery and now telling our friends and family about this journey we are beginning.
