My mom was a caregiver for many people including my dad’s grandmother, Gandy, who lived to be 102. Gandy outlived her husband, sister, only child & a grandson. Mom told us that when she had to deliver the hard news of a loved one’s passing, Gandy would be sad for a moment then take a deep breath and respond with, “Every day I have a choice to dwell on what I’ve lost or be grateful for what I have.”
Gandy chose gratitude amidst pain. Mom adopted this mantra throughout her ALS journey, as she grieved countless losses of her physical abilities. This Thanksgiving and every day may we choose thankfulness, even in times of loss - in honor of my Mom & Gandy.
