Sam’s Story

Site created on September 6, 2014

Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma stage llA on August 26, 2014.  Two weeks prior to this, Sam had noticed a lump on her neck while at Valleyfair and she also had had a cough for a couple of weeks. We went to our family physician and he was very concerned and suspected lymphoma.  Thankfully, we were able to see specialists quickly leading to a week of tests, biopsies, scans and ultimately a diagnosis and our first oncology appointment.  Sam is being cared for by an excellent team at Minneapolis Children's Specialty Clinics led by Dr. Bruce Bostrom.

We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support, generosity, and prayers from family and friends.  We ask that you keep Sam and our family in your thoughts and prayers as we continue on this journey.

Sam is doing well. She made the three year cancer free milestone on December 3rd.  We continue to pray that she will remain in remission for a very long time. She struggles with the loss of several young friends to cancer recently and has some who are still fighting hard. She continues her studies and is very excited to turn twenty-one on the 18th of this month.

Sam's cousin, Nella Pitzen, was in a horrific accident on April 2nd in Fargo where she was ejected from her Jeep on I-94. Nella has a traumatic head injury and remains in a coma at Essentia Hospital in Fargo. We are asking for prayers for her and the family at this extremely difficult time.  Here is a link to her CaringBridge site if you want more information.
