I'm not sure how to begin a post like this. Does one just lay it out there, exposing all of the details with no emotion? Or does one lay it out there with all the emotions that come with a diagnosis like this? I don't have an answer for that. All I can do is send out a message on Chris and Erin's behalf, hoping that prayers will bring healing to their sweet, sweet boy. So please bear with me as I navigate this post.... Today Chris and Erin had to hear the words no parent should ever have to endure. Sammy was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. For those of you who would like a better understanding, here is a definition: Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that begins in the nerve tissues (neuroblasts) of a child's abdomen, pelvis, neck, spinal cord or adrenal glands, located above the kidneys. Neuroblastoma commonly affects children age 5 or younger. Here is what I know to the best of my knowledge/memory: The tests showed a large, calcified tumor resting on top of his kidney. The sympathetic nervous system is involved, though we don't know to what extent. There are also lymph nodes affected in his lungs. Both the pain in Sammy's stomach and in his legs could be symptomatic of this diagnosis but they will learn more in the following days. They are taking Sammy to Children's Hospital tomorrow morning and will be meeting with Dr. Elizabeth Thompson. They will be discussing the prognosis and treatment options. At this point that is all I am able to relay. Chris and Erin are asking for your prayers and understanding of their need for family time right now. They know they have wonderful friends and family ready and willing to do whatever is needed and they will let us know when they do.... but for right now they need our prayers. Please don't expect phone calls to be answered in the following days as they just need to focus on their family and finding rest. We will continue to update this when information is available.

Sometimes despite all of the horrible things that weigh us down, we are given moments that help us stay strong.  I believe Erin and Sammy had a special moment today that I hope will stay with her forever.  I was reminded how true this statement was, even when we can't make sense of things.  Thankfully, we were given a glimpse of child-like faith that can remind us of our own.
This morning as Sammy woke up he said to Erin....
"Guess who I love most Mom?" Erin: "Who? Me??" Sam...."no. God because he loves us the most, right mom?" yes baby. yes He does.

I'm sure that I can speak on behalf of Chris, Erin and their extended family and say thank you.  Thank you for your outpouring of love and a special thank you to all of the prayers so many are lifting up for Sam.  Everyone has been asking what they can do and right now that is the best thing possible.  Just keep praying.

Chris, Erin and Sam made it to Omaha this morning and have a busy day ahead of them as they try and get some answers.  Please continue to respect their need for privacy and time as they just get through these upcoming appointments.  Erin plans on letting us know updates so that we can update everyone here.

I have attached a photo of Sam on the way to Omaha this morning, holding onto a special gift from Terri.  There is no way to look at his precious face and not smile, even if it is through tears.

We will update you when we know more.  Also, please remember that Ella does not know details at this point so if you have kids around her age please be sensitive to that.  Erin and Chris want to handle that on their own, when they have more answers.
Thank you,

First and foremost, Chris and Erin say thank you for the outpouring of love and support that you are showing their family.  Sammy is loving the balloons and cards that have arrived today!

Here is the latest:

1)  The doctors will be performing a bone marrow biopsy tomorrow (Wednesday).

2)  Surgery is scheduled for 1:30 tomorrow afternoon.
Dr. Abdessalam wants to try and take the tumor out immediately.  He doesn't believe the tumor is infiltrating any organs. Once he gets in there he will assess what he sees, but surgery is the plan going in.  He hopes to take the tumor out laparoscopically.

3) Doctors confirmed that the cancer has spread to Sammy's lymph nodes and bones.
They plan on doing a Spect scan today or tomorrow to check bone involvement.

4) They hope to have an absolute diagnosis by Friday or Monday.  This will all be determined by the results of the biopsy.  The cells they remove from the biopsy should be able to tell them what type of chemotherapy treatments will be most effective.

5). They are hoping to be able to go home for the weekend to spend time together as a family.

6) An aggressive treatment plan will be put into place.  If all goes well Sammy will begin chemotherapy treatment next Monday.  He will receive aggressive chemo/radiation and a bone marrow transplant.

That is the latest update for today.  We will continue to notify everyone of updates on this site.  Please continue to check back or sync this with your phone and/or email.  Chris and Erin appreciate all of the support and prayers.

Surgery Day. I'm sure all of you woke up thinking the same thing. All I can think of is Sam. and Erin. and Chris. and the doctors. and the Nahorny and Cimpl families. What a whirlwind the past few days have been. We know their world has been shaken. Their hearts are breaking. Everyone can only imagine the ache and think that it would be more than we could take. So Lord, take their tears. Take their fears. Take hold and pull them through this. We know their strength. We know they won't give up. We know you are the ultimate Healer and Comforter. Please bring them both. Please watch for an update later today. Surgery is at 1:30. We don't expect to hear right away as Chris and Erin are going to want to be with Sam in recovery and will want to speak to the Doctors about how things went as well as what is to come. We will update everyone when we know more. As I was editing this post here is the chorus of the song that came on the radio. I couldn't help but share it. I'm clinging to these words today: "Our God is greater. Our God is stronger. God you are higher than any other. Our God is healer, awesome in power, our God."
