John (and Michele), Thank you for sharing Ryan's story! What a scary injury to have to deal with as parents. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you navigate thru this as a family.

On a side note, make sure to take care of yourselves - I know this first hand as a caregiver. About 2 years ago, my husband suffered a moderate traumatic brain injury mountain biking. If you didn't know him you wouldn't be able to tell, but nothing is quite the same. We've all needed to adjust to his new normal - and this adjustment is still in process. While I believe (as I'm sure you do also!) that Ryan will make a fully functional recovery over time, I also know that nothing will quite be the same - not bad, just different. This can cause frustration, depression, etc - I strongly suggest you seek out support groups for you guys and for him to help with these transitions - they can be invaluable as you move forward! Make sure to keep a balance between your role as a caregiver and also your self care. Right now, I'm sure you've got both feet in the caregiver circle (how could you not!), but take time to care for yourself - you'll be a better caregiver when Ryan needs you and you'll have better stamina to do what you need to do with/for him. I recently had 2 experiences where I was in a room with other TBI caregivers and it was such a relief to be completely understood without having to say a word - it was sooo supportive for me. I would be more than happy to be a support for you guys in this regard - please feel free to contact me if you need to talk. In the meantime, kudos for getting such great care for Ryan! While I don't know him, he seems like a strong, resilient and motivated young man!
