Journal entry by Katie Porfidio —
It's hard to believe it's been two weeks since my last post. As we work to return to our new normal, we are busy tackling the enormous to-do list that has piled up. A focus on acceptance, self-kindness, and patience is in practice in the Porfidio residence.
I'm happy to share that Roman is getting stronger and has shed his 'corset' (as Juliana calls it) as his core strength slowly rebuilds. The 'corset' is a large velcro belly band he has been wearing for the last month to provide him with assisted support while his surgically cut abdominal muscles heal. Roman's 'Mercedes Benz' incision is also healing nicely; however, he continues using steri-strips (butterfly bandages) to pinch the open epidermis areas together. Roman is moving about easier, including getting in and out of bed and climbing the stairs. For now, with the bitter, negative temps, it's laps around the house.
Roman starts the MSU spring semester this week from home, taking two online business classes. He will also need to get his academic brain back online to complete his four incomplete fall courses. We are hopeful this won't be too overwhelming to tackle at the same time. He'll need a dose of that patience I mentioned and a shot of perseverance to power through it. Roman fully intends to return to in-person classes at MSU in Bozeman for the fall 2024 semester. There is more to share, but my eyes are glazing over, so I'll aim to post again soon.
We reflect daily on our blessings and with gratitude to the incredibly supportive and generous community that has rallied around us. Thank you!
