Journal entry by Judi Maddox

9/28/21 was one year since Bob’s accident! Reflecting on God’s faithfulness and what we’ve learned ....
Bob was doing an activity  he loved and he started kiteboarding again in July!
A trauma nurse and 3 doctors came quickly to his aid and stabilized his neck not knowing his C1 was fractured. A fellow Kiteboarder was able to get my phone number and called me. Thankfully he didn’t alarm me and my mind didn’t go to worst case scenario. Our daughter drove me to the hospital but couldn’t go in with me. A nurse told me what to expect - he had already been fully scanned for injuries, his hip was shattered and leg in traction, neck brace, head bleeding and bandaged, right eye swollen shut... going to Neuro trauma ICU. Surgery next day to repair scalp artery and clean out hematoma but he was stable and moved out of ICU!  Had to wait 4 days to get surgery on hip.

We felt surrounded by prayers and offers of help. Friends moved furniture to make a bedroom downstairs when he came home as he used a wheelchair and walker for several weeks. At times the pain was unbearable and neither of us  could sleep. I had to fight to get his pain meds renewed. Because of Covid we felt isolated but so thankful for meals and groceries dropped off!
Finally in Dec he had tests that revealed severe sciatic nerve damage down to his toes but had to wait another month to see dr again and get a pain block injection.  In about ten days his hip/leg  pain started decreasing and he resumed PT after we recovered from Covid.

Over the months he has gained most of his strength back and is working full time from home.  God has amazed us with generous friends as Bob is developing our financial/prayer team for the ministry of training international leaders. We traveled to California twice this summer - we had our 50th High school reunion on 9/11!
Life is fragile. I’ve struggled more with  anxiety this summer than in the midst of Bob’s trauma and healing. My body and mind is tired. I’m still processing the grief from losing my mom and brother in 2019 before the pandemic.

A few prayer updates-
  1. Our friend Linda completed her chemo for ovarian cancer after healing from surgery. She will have follow up scans. Pray cancer will not come back!
  2. Kelli that I met in the hospital is hoping to bring her husband Jake home in October. They’ve had a long, difficult journey of rehab and setbacks. They love Jesus and have a wonderful tribe surrounding them but life is really hard.
We love you and thank you for your friendship!
