Journal entry by Rich Brahm

This is my third day of hospitalization; I’m receiving the pre-conditioning chemo. So far the side effects haven’t hit me; they typically take a week to 10 days to start, which would put them just after the transplant. Tomorrow I start on an immune-suppressant medication to reduce the severity of any graft vs. host disease. Yesterday we had a nice family meal in my hospital room, with take-out food from City Barbecue (a nearby restaurant we discovered last year during my CAR-T recovery).

My social worker here at Emory let me know that prospects for finding an available room at Hope Lodge are not very promising; this was confirmed by one of my nurses as she has observed that allo transplant patients have had to find other accommodations. We have good friends who live about 20 miles from Emory and have offered us the use of their basement bedroom, but it’s hard to predict whether or not I’ll have the strength to navigate the stairs when I am first discharged from the hospital so we’re exploring other options – including AirBnb.

Other than that, things are going great so far. I appreciate your continued prayers and support.
