On Friday, December 16th, 2022 at approximately 10:30 am, David had went to  the church and was walking down the street that is owned by the church to talk to some tree trimming workers. The roads had been packed down with snow and ice, and he suddenly fell down on his back. He could not move any part of his body and the workers called an ambulance. He was transported to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN. They confirmed that he broke bones in his neck and went into surgery at about 6:30 pm.  The neurosurgeon removed C3 and C4 and put a rod in his spine and screwed C2 into C5 and C6.

Due to the spinal cord injury, he has paralysis in his arms, legs, feet and hands. It will be a long road ahead of rehab, OT and PT to determine when/if he will regain feeling and movement in body. The rehab may be slow and take months. Rehab will also work with the family and David to gain as much independence as possible.

Journal entry by Jennifer Demos

The Fourth of July brought fireworks, and not the kind we’d like to see. Unfortunately, dads home health care team were not able to change a piece of medical equipment by the time it needed to be changed and the four days overage landed him in the emergency room and the ICU with a UTI and sepsis.  He is now back in our home after almost a week in the hospital (Jen and Joel’s) but much of the progress he had made as far as therapy was impeded because of the incredible amounts of tone as a result of the sickness. It’s frustrating for dad; seems like one step forward three steps back.

Keep dad in your thoughts and prayers. He is so tired and hurting so bad it’s hard for the rest of the family to watch and not be able to do much. We now need a clearance from the ER so he can rejoin therapy as they will only hold his spot for two weeks. So, pray that we get the clearance to go,, the septic headaches go away, and that his muscles return to at least pre sepsis levels. He is such a good man - it’s really hard to watch him suffer. We could really use a win...😢
