Reece’s Story

Site created on April 7, 2021

On April 6th, Reece Poole was in a very tragic car accident. We have created this site to provide updates on his health condition as well as a place to support Reece, his family James, Kelly and Rylan, and each other. Reece is currently in the Trauma ICU unit at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center. He sustained several severe injuries in the accident, but his condition has improved some since being admitted. We know Reece is incredibly strong and he is loved and supported by so many. We will provide updates as we can and appreciate prayers and well wishes for Reece’s recovery.

**The family is not requesting any monetary donations.  Caring Bridge automatically includes a link to donate to their website platform.   We wanted to make you aware that this is not a fundraiser for the family.  We ask that you continue to say prayers for Reece to breathe on his own without the support of the ventilator, that he physically responds to verbal commands, and healing for his brain.  Again, we appreciate all your support and will continue to update you on his progress.**

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kelly Poole

Hello family and friends!

I hope this update finds everyone well.

I want to start off by apologizing for the long break in posts.  I didn’t intend to go 6 months without an update but here we are in April already.

Last month we celebrated Reece’s 20th birthday!  James, Reece and I went to an afternoon movie and then met family for dinner.  We missed Rylan, who is in Lubbock, but it was a great day!

Today, one year since the accident, we celebrated his amazing recovery!  We took time to reflect on how blessed and thankful we are for his healing and for family and friends, new and old, that supported us in so many ways during a very difficult time.  Thank you!  And a special thank you, again, to the first responders from fire stations 20, 27 and 43, EMS, the doctors and nurses at St. David’s Trauma Center and the therapists at TIRR Memorial in Houston and NeuroRestorative in Austin.

I only have a few updates since my last post in September:

Reece has completed all therapy sessions and he joined a gym in October where he works out regularly.  For those of you who know him, he has always enjoyed lifting weights and exercising so this was a big step in getting back to a normal routine.

The dental implant placed in November did not take, even after the bone graft, so we are back to square one.  He has a follow up appointment this week to see if the “hole” in his gum has healed and to discuss next steps.

Also in November, we had some neurotransmitter testing done to determine the levels of some of the essential neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA, etc.  Not surprising, some of his counts were out of range.  To help, we are giving him a few additional supplements.  He said he can tell a difference and I am curious to see the results when we retest him this month.

In January he had his last appointment at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital.  The instructor said he did great on his driving test, including avoiding a mattress that fell off a truck on IH35, and all restrictions have been removed.

We continue to support and encourage Reece; he has been given a second chance and we intend to make the best of it!

One year ago was the first Caringbridge post to inform everyone of Reece’s status.  I posted several updates the following months to try and keep you all updated on his recovery.  It is with a smile on my face and a happy heart that I can now inform you all this will be the last post.  Again, thank you all for caring and for your continued support!  We are excited to see what the future holds for Reece!
