Journal entry by Rebecca Ross

As most of you know, my mom went into the hospital July 3, 2021 where she spent 38 days. During these 38 days, I was with her every day except one. During the last 12 days of her life, I stayed with her 24 hours per day. Unfortunately, she passed away August 10, 2021 and I miss her. During the days and weeks that followed, I kept myself busy making her funeral arrangements, trying to get her paperwork in order, and cleaning out her apartment. It was during this time that I noticed a lump on my left breast. I was worried yet knew I had the responsibility of cleaning out my moms apartment. On September 30, 2021, when I shut the door for the very last time at my moms apartment, I hoped my life would return to normal.
The following day I scheduled a mammogram. My prior mammogram was October 8, 2020 and it was normal. My mammogram was scheduled October 11, 2021. I arrived to the visit early, had my mammogram and before I left the office, I was asked to complete a form titled recall patient. When I inquired why I was completing this form, the radiologist technician said it’s only in case they need to discuss testing with you. I wasn’t even out of the parking lot when my phone rang. It was the radiologist stating that I need further testing on my left breast. I was scheduled at the Breast Center at Akron City Hospital Wednesday, October 13th. I had a diagnostic mammogram and a breast ultrasound. The radiologist come and spoke with me and said my tumor is highly suspicious of being malignant. I was then moved to a nurse navigator. She explained the results of both tests and scheduled me with the surgeon for 2 PM that same day. The surgeon reviewed my results and stated that I would need a biopsy on my left breast. The biopsy was scheduled Thursday, October 14th. I arrived early for my appointment. The radiologist performed my biopsy with the longest needle I’ve ever saw! The procedure was uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as the mammogram that followed…ouch.
On Friday, October 15, 2021, I received the results of my biopsy. I have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, Grade 3. I have so many emotions and they’re difficult to explain. I know I have a long journey ahead of me. I’ve prayed, I’ve prayed a lot. I know God is hearing my prayers. I ask each of you if you would pray for my family and myself. Thank you and God bless you all.
