Randy’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
In November 2017 I met with Dr. David Hitson for my annual physical and he had noticed high levels of protein in my blood work. He was concerned with the results and wanted me to see an oncologist as soon as possible. After meeting with my oncologist he ordered several tests that revealed I have Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow. I started the pre-treatments at the end of December that lasted for 3 months. The treatments included oral chemotherapy, cancer killing injections, steroids, and an anti-viral medication. I was blessed to have very few side affects during my pre-treatments as I prepared for stem cell transplant in April 2018. My oncologist at Piedmont South-Newnan then transferred me to Emory for the stem cell transplant process. After lots of blood work and an extensive pre-transplant evaluation at Emory (pulmonary test, EKG, ECHO, lots of X-rays, and another bone marrow biopsy), I was ready to begin the stem cell transplant process. We have started preparing for the transplant by Belinda giving me 4 injections per day for 5 days to aid my stem cell growth. I will get my Central Line inserted in my chest April 16, and then the stem cell collection begins on April 17 which could last 1-3 days. I will be admitted to the newer Emory University Hospital Tower on April 30 for two weeks and receive a strong chemotherapy later that day. On May 2 they transplant my stem cells as I start the long road back to normalcy. After my two week hospital stay they want us to stay in the Emory area for approximately two more weeks so I can be checked occasionally. They tell us my full recovery may take 4-6 months but hopefully sooner as I look forward to getting back to my normal life. I want to thank all my family and friends who have lifted us up in prayer and thoughtful support with cards, calls, visits, texts, and emails during my treatments.

We received great news today that my follow up test results showed an almost complete remission of my cancer. I will begin maintenance meds as soon as possible to continue the fight but I can now get out and about without wearing a mask and do many of my normal activities since my white blood cell count is back to normal. As you know, Multiple Myeloma is incurable but with the maintenance drugs I hope to lead a long and productive life. I will have to go back to Emory every month for blood work and to receive an IV of a bone strengthening drug but I praise God for the good results. Thank you to everyone for your prayers and concern during the past 7 months.
