Randy’s Story

Site created on April 8, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On April 8th in the early morning, Randy suffered a massive heart attack. We were lucky in that everything aligned so that I was at his side when his heart stopped and could start CPR within seconds. EMS were amazing! They arrived on scene in seven minutes and worked to bring him back. By the time we reached the hospital, Randy had a pulse and was starting to regain consciousness. He was quickly evaluated in the ER and was taken to the cardiac cath lab for a stent. The artery that caused the arrest was 100% blocked. The procedure was successful. He is resting at Munson and has been communicating via text. We will have a clearer picture as the recovery progresses. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, Randy is not able to have visitors. So I am thankful for this space where all of our friends and family can send messages and check for updates. ❤️

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jennifer Shafer

Well, the day has arrived! September 1st, 2021 was three months since open heart surgery. This means restrictions are lifted! I am still in disbelief that we went through what we did, that he is here, has no cognitive deficits (worse than before the arrest 🤣), and that he has recovered so amazingly! He continues to go to cardiac rehab twice a week and will be finished with that in early October. They have added some arm weight exercises to build his strength now that his restrictions are done. He will have a follow up appt next week with the cardiologist and I am only anticipating good news and how impressed the doc is. He had labs done today and will have a repeat echo some time in the near future. I am sure it is going to show his heart is amazing.

We are soon celebrating our five year wedding anniversary and have planned the honeymoon we never took! I am so thankful we were given a second chance to make the most of life together. ❤️

Now that we are somewhat back to normal life, I don’t plan on writing anymore updates. I don’t know how I could top this one today anyway. My heart is full and I just want to thank everyone one more time for all of your love and support! We love you all!🥰
