Ralph’s Story

Site created on October 3, 2019

Our Ralph (aka: Vo, Grandpa, Captain of the Houseboat, Sporter of the Stash, and Pirate) has recently been diagnosed with small cell bladder cancer. Our hearts hit the floor when we heard this news and our eyes keep leaking, but we are encouraged that the prognosis is good. The cancer has not invaded the muscle walls of the bladder, which is positive, but small cell is a more aggressive form of cancer.

Treatments will begin on October 3rd, and will be monitored by Stanford Oncologist, Dr. Shah. Most treatments will take place at the Standford Medical Center in San Jose. Chemo will take place for 3 consecutive days, and then Ralph will have 3 weeks to recover before the next round. Currently, 4 rounds of chemo are scheduled and there will be scans to monitor his progress.

Journal entry by Corrie Gaumnitz

Ralph is Home! Yesterday he was discharged from Stanford hospital and Nancy got him home in time to watch the end of the football game. Talk about amazing, Ralph was up and around a bit today and even fixed a toilet. It's going to be a long road to recovery, but it's wonderful that he is out of the hospital. We are hoping to get the pathology report by the end of the week which will determine if there needs to be any further treatment, we hope and pray that treatment is in the rear view.
