Hi Ellyn, You’re correct about the payment processing fees (which apply to Venmo, PayPal, and other online payment platforms as well if you use a credit card), but I just wanted to clarify that GoFundMe does *not* take 5% of donations raised. GoFundMe’s free platform is supported by “tips” or donations from users, but you can easily change the suggested tip amount to $0.
Of course donations are welcome through whatever means is most convenient for you!
GoFundMe is a for-profit company. It takes 5 percent of donations raised on its platform. There is also a 2.9 percent payment-processing fee collected on each donation, along with 30 cents for every donation. That means if a campaign raised $1,000 through 10 donations of $100 each, GoFundMe would collect about $82.
A personal donation might be the best option.
