Journal entry by Donald Lawson

What a beautiful day it was, December 1, 2020...it will never leave my mind. (Oh and by the way, my bone marrow biopsy from a few weeks ago came back clean.  Thank you, Jesus!) December 1st started out full as usual, with my neurology appointment, blood draw, oncology appointment, then my FINAL Vin Cristine infusion and Spinal tap with Intrathecal Chemotherapy.  I savored the day, each moment.  You were all with me in mind and spirit.

Donnie got to share the first bell ring after spinal chemo as the staff gathered around me and wheeled me down the hall.  It was so special.  They have become like family to me.  I held it together as my transporter wheeled me to my final infusion.

I was reminded on that last tour of how I imagined being in a gondala in Venice during my first transport thru Barnes for spinal chemo.  The sights hadn't changed much but the feeling was surreal.  After 2 1/2 years, I was at the finish line!

The most special moment came after my infusion.  I was busy getting my meds, while the staff was busy gathering my graduation gifts and a much earned certificate of completion.  They called my doctor so that she and her staff could watch as I rang the bell.  I expected Donnie and few from my doctor's office.  But what came next was just magical....As I slowly turned the corner to head toward the bell, I nearly fell to my knees.  Everything was in slow motion and it took me a few seconds to realize who was waiting for me.....it was my mom, dad and my two brothers!!!!  I lost it...I latched on to my mom and the tears came running!  I couldn't believe they got in with all the new restrictions.  I got to hug each one before walking to that glorious bell.  And then I rang that bell...AMEN!

I'm still in awe of all the gifts and cards and well wishes and caroling that awaited me....my cup runneth over.  Thank you isn't enough...may 2021 be filled with LOVE and LAUGHTER and things that MATTER.  It took an army to get through this battle..thanks for fighting with me.

All my love,

Rachael
