Mike’s Story

Site created on September 23, 2020

Welcome to Mike’s CaringBridge website. The website exists to keep family and friends updated in one place. Mike and The Authier Family appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Mike was diagnosed with a rare cancer, clear cell sarcoma, in the beginning of September 2020. Clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue is a rare type of cancer primarily affecting young adults between 20 to 40 years old. Sarcomas are cancers that arise within connective tissues, such as bone, muscle, fat, and tendons. Clear cell sarcoma is slightly more common in females than in males and clear cell sarcoma is a translocation-associated sarcoma, which means that a genetic mutation defines the disease. The genetic cause for clear cell sarcoma is thought to be its defining gene translocation.

Journal entry by Audrey Whitworth Hobbs

Today Mike saw a sarcoma specialist at UT Southwestern. The specialist suggested Mike move toward treatment at MD Anderson. MDA has more options for clear cell carcoma and clinical trials. They are currently preforming genetic testing on the sample tissue collected during his surgery. This will allow them the opportunity to better tailor his treatment specifically to his cancer. If you have been following Mike’s story, you know this is not a life style cancer. It is extremely rare and little data exists on the cancer as a whole, from origin to treatment. Mike will have scans at the end of this month in Fort Worth and then they will be reviewed at UT Southwestern at the first of November. He should be able to see a physician at MDA in early November.

Mike is in full blown physical therapy, he is doing an amazing job. His bandages are off and he is well on his way to becoming more independent and mobile.

We are still asking for prayers and support. As they transition to traveling to and from MDA, there will be needs. Please check on them, serving them does not always mean monetarily. Mike would love to hear from you and Lauren needs the support as well.

Please follow Pray for Mike on Facebook. Jaycee has poured herself into raising donations for Mike and his family. She pops up everywhere, almost every day. She is working diligently to host many different avenues for our community to serve The Authier’s needs.
