Evelyn’s Story

Site created on March 20, 2019

On Monday March 18th, our mother was rushed by ambulance to Glen Cove Hospital after collapsing in her home.  The doctors at Glen Cove Hospital found a mass in her head and then transported her to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.  After a CT scan and MRI, it was confirmed that there was a tangerine sized tumor pressing against her brain and the pressure is what caused her to collapse.  The tumor was found behind her left eye, pressing against the brain.  She had an 8 hour surgery yesterday (Tuesday March 19th) and is now in the neurological ICU.  She’s been intubated since she’s been here and has a drainage tube draining fluid from her brain.  After surgery, the surgeon said that from what he can see and from his professional opinion, the tumor appears not to be cancerous, but we can’t  rule that out.  They are sending the tumor to pathology for further testing for a more definitive result.   She’s currently sedated and as of now, not responding to any commands.  The ICU team of doctors and surgeons feel that the surgery was successful, but being this involves the brain, anything can happen at any time.  She still has a very long road ahead of her.  Please keep our mom in your thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Christopher Regolini

I know it’s been a while since an update has been posted, but things have been a little hectic!  So, in rehab my moms blood pressure has been dropping dramatically and she’s been have high fevers.  Her doctors ran every test imaginable on her and everything came back pretty much normal.  They deemed the low blood pressures and fevers were a result of her brain getting used to its new normal state.  Because of this, she hasn’t been able to participate in PT because she literally has  been passing out just when they try to stand her due to the drop in blood pressure.  She was also unfortunately transported back to Manhasset hospital last week because she has excess water on her brain.  She is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday where they will be placing a shunt in her head to drain the excess water to her abdomen.  Her team of doctors told us that she shouldn’t have visitors at this time.  I’ll update everyone on this site when that changes.  She’s slowly starting to recognize what she’s going through and is expressing her emotions more.  Her speech still isn’t there yet though and she’s extremely frustrated because she can’t verbalize what she’s thinking. Hopefully when she’s back in rehab after this surgery, things will start improving!  Keep the prayers going!
