Journal entry by Loren Nelson III —
So, Lucas has been waiting eight weeks to continue chemo. His neutrophil count was very low from the four weeks of the second chemo. The chemo killed all but 3% of the cancer, but it also killed the neutrophils which are manufactured in bone marrow. Neutrophils are a common type of white blood cell important to fighting off infections. Each week he has been tested and his neutrophil levels have been slowly rising. The fear was the remaining cancer would reproduce before the neutrophil levels reached the level to continue chemo. The doctor did not want to start chemo early because it would kill off the remaining neutrophils and Lucas for sure would have to have a bone marrow transplant. On December 24 Lucas went in for labs. The doctor came into the room very amazed. His neutrophil count had jumped about 300 points, to the amount that was needed to start chemo. A Christmas Miracle!! So Lucas start chemo treatment yesterday and will continue four times a week until further notice.
