Newest Update

Journal entry by Kate Anderson

Hello Everyone, Dads doctors appointment went really well yesterday. We saw both the ENT and Plastic Surgeon. They are very happy with his recovery. His wounds and tongue are healing very well. He was able to drink water for the first time which he greatly enjoyed! The speech pathologist (under the direction of physicians) came in and had Dad swallow first some applesauce and then a small piece of a grahm cracker to see what he could do. He was able to chew and swallow both! He will need to proceed slowly to get used to the new sensation but the doctors would like for him start trying to eat more soft solid food and get away from the feedings through the g-tube.

Moving forward Dad will need about 6 weeks of radiation to his tongue. My parents decided to continue Dads radiation at Loyola because the care we have received from their head and neck cancer team has been fantastic. Radiation is likely to start in a few weeks.

For now we are going to discontinue updates here on caring bridge. Our family would like to thank everyone for your kind words, and support. We truly believe that the power of prayer along with such an amazing support system has gotten us all through this difficult time. We know that this journey will continue on for some time but we have to hope and pray that the worst is now behind us. Thank you again for your continued love, support and prayers.
