Phil’s Story

Site created on July 9, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Phil has been suffering from spondylolisthesis (broken back) for over 20 years.  He's always had pain, but over the last two years, the nerve pain has become intolerable.  On August 1st, he will undergo a surgery that will involve fusing the tailbone and backbone.  This involves surgery first through his abdomen and then through his back.   He will be in the hospital for at least 3 days at St. David's Central, then he will be home with 24 hour supervision and support for about 10-14 days.  He will be in a back brace for 8 weeks including physical therapy.

Please keep Phil in your prayers the day of the surgery and for recovery - that he will heal quickly and completely and be able to free himself from the pain meds quickly and smoothly.  Many of you know that Phil is an extremely involved father, usually taking the kids to and from camp and cooking most of our meals as he works from home and is an excellent cook.  If you feel called to help, we could use some help with meals the first few weeks.  I'm sure he will want some visitors as he will not be able to do much for a few weeks, and we might need help with the kids at times.  We truly appreciate your prayers and help!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kristin Hampsten

Phil was discharged today so we are home.  Trying to navigate how he will get around here and get settled in before boys get here.  Very hard for him to get up and down.  He's resting now.  They agreed to let me care for drains here and pull them out (I might look to a more medical friend to help with that but I can certainly do it if needed).

Prayers for my anxiety; Phil's pain, healing and recovery.  We have some diet things to work on to improve healing this time around so prayers as we navigate that as well.

Thank you for checking in, prayers and well wishes.  We love you, our tribe!
