Update: Peyton is currently facing a lot of unknowns as she battles a Ewings Sarcoma recurrance/relapse in her lung. We don't have a definitive treatment plan because we are in unknown territory and there isn't a successful treatment protocol for Ewings patients. We believe in miracles and proclaim healing in Jesus' name. Pray that the tumor in her lung is destroyed and that she has no further recurrance.
Initial diagnoses-Thank you for your ongoing support. Our sweet 13 year old daughter, Peyton, was diagnosed with cancer on 2/15/2022. She has a rare type of bone cancer called Ewing Sarcoma. We thought she was having horrible growing pains. She had been seeing a Dr at Shriners and her Pediatrician for a year about the pains. All her blood work and scans came back normal, until one day they didn't.
The mass was found inside her left tibia and was quite large (nearly 9"). It took an MRI to finally spot the tumor. The goal over the past few months of treatment has been to shrink the cancerous tumor with chemo. Thank God, it shrunk substantially with the first phase of chemo, but they still had to operate to remove the sarcoma. This type of cancer likes to spread to the lungs, thankfully Peyton's tumor has remained localized, and that's made surgery and treatment pretty straight forward. So far she has had nearly 75 treatments of chemo. After surgery she will have roughly 120 more treatments in order to make sure there are no cells left behind, they're undetectable on scans. After phase 1 of chemo, she had surgery and most of her tibia & the tumor was removed on 7/8/22. She now has a new bone that was reinforced with a titanium rod. Unfortunately a portion of the tumor showed positive margins after surgery so we have had to add radiation to her treatment plan. Starting Monday, July 25th, Peyton goes in for her first round in phase 2 of chemo as well as the start of daily radiation for 5.5 weeks. She will be admitted to sacred heart every 14 days for either 2 days or 5 days and then we will be driving down to the hospital daily for her radiation. It's a lot, but we hope it will go by fast and that it will be effective. We are praying that these treatments will set Peyton up to be free of cancer by December. There are a lot of unknowns but we choose to live on the side of HOPE. Prior to Peyton's cancer diagnosis she was a very healthy and active athlete. She loves to run, swim and play basketball & we are hopeful that she will be able to all that again one day soon. Your financial support and prayers mean so much to all of us. At every road block we have come to, a bridge has been built by a friend, family member or stranger and that help has given us so much HOPE. We have been able to witness the beautiful and compassionate side of this horrific and evil illness and want to say thank you to all of you for stepping in to be a bridge for our family. Thank you for your help as we battle. In our family we like to say "Prayers up! Swords up!". The fight is on and Peyton has plenty of spunk and fight in her to win this. Please pray for her new tibia to heal and for any microscopic cancer cells to die forever. Update: Peyton had to have her left leg amputated above the knee on 2/9/23. She has 6 weeks of pretty intense restrictions to allow healing of the nerves and muscles. She is doing really well with the healing portion. Her stitches came out last week (3 weeks post surgery). She is up and crutching around a lot. She has quite a bit of breakthrough pain but she chooses to manage most of it with activity and distraction. She is amazing! On 3/9/23 she has her 3 month scans and on 3/20/23 she will have her port removed so long as everything looks well, which we anticipate being the case. We got the CT results tonight from our Oncologist but we haven't had the chance to actually review the images ourselves yet. Tomorrow he will go over the details. There was no change in the tumor - no new growth and no more spots in her lungs. Thats great news! Praise God for no new growth.
We knew it may be too early to see any drastic change and her Oncologist said he was pleased with the result. We are counting it a blessing that there is no sign of growth and will continue to pray that at the next scan it will be smaller or gone!
We also got news that one of the trials he was was most looking at getting Peyton signed up with at St. Judes has suspended enrollment while they review results and see if it can go to stage 2 in the trial. I don't know all the details but we will be praying for positive results in the trial and hopefully it moves into stage 2 quickly and we can still enroll her if needed. Ultimately we will be praying that she won't need a second chemo protocol and that she'll respond with total control and annihilation of Ewings!
