Pete’s Story

Site created on May 6, 2023

Yesterday afternoon, 5/5/2023, Pete was playing baseball and he collided with another player. Pete suffered a serious injury to his head. He was immediately taken to Nebraska Med Center and is currently in the ICU there. We will use this site to keep friends and family updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Bryon Steffensmeier

Pete had an MRI and neurosurgery follow up today, and all looked normal!  He has made great progress over the last month attending outpatient therapy at Madonna and working on school assignments remotely.  He is planning to return to school on Monday, September 11.  He has been working hard and just got the green light from his doctors to go back to the gym – he is excited about that.

Thank you to Kayla for translating our news these past months and keeping everyone informed.  We hope we don’t have any more updates, and Pete can stay healthy and continue to get stronger.

All things considered he is in good shape; he will have a few challenges to address but is staying positive.  He does not have hearing in his left ear and has visual field cuts in both eyes.  He can get to 20/20 with his right eye looking straight on with loss to the right peripherally and his left eye is legally blind but is picking up colors and shapes to the right side.  He will continue with vision therapy over the next few months to help his brain adjust to the limitations. He might have cosmetic eye surgery in a few months if his left eye movement doesn’t improve on its own.  His smile has started to come back and his eyelid is closing since the facial nerve decompression surgery, so hoping that continues to improve over the next few months.

We are so thankful for the thoughts, prayers, and generosity that this entire community has shown.  It truly did pick us up during some of the hardest times and gave us faith and hope that we’d get to this point. We hope we can personally thank each and every one of you now that we are getting back out into the world.
