Journal entry by Mary Kay Roberts

Hi all …

Another day of not seeing or talking to Peter. Thank God for nurses everywhere, and for the incredible staff at KU Med. They keep me informed, then I spend an hour looking up the medical jargon they feed me. Free education. Well, not really free, I know the bills will come.

So, today … Peter is still intubated. They found a pneumothorax (don’t trust my spelling) on his right lung, which is a pocket of air that – depending on its size – can put pressure on the lung and further inhibit breathing. Peter’s pocket is very small. If it gets larger, an option would be to put a tube in to release the pressure. It’s an invasive procedure that, like any invasive procedure, has its risks. The good news is that, during the course of today, the pocket has not grown and appears stable. They are x-raying his lungs every few hours and watching it very closely. So for now, no tube.

If he does need the tube, the risk is bleeding. Because his platelets are so low, they gave him some just to be prepared if the need arises.

They are keeping him a little more sedated because of the pneumothorax, but when they back off of it periodically, he responds to commands. Therefore, I have given the nurse a litany of messages of love and support from everyone, with the caveat that he needs to do his part, too. Because he’s British and they are a tough bunch.

All our lives are surreal right now. I am thinking of all of you. Thank you for your caring.
