Peter’s Story

Site created on May 8, 2018

As many of you already know, Peter was diagnosed on April 18th (2018) with multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. This diagnosis was a shock and devastating to Peter, his wife, Helena, family and friends.

Peter is the Chaplain and Director of Pastoral Care at Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, Florida.  He has dedicated his life to serving the spiritual and emotional needs of those who are suffering and facing life and death decisions in their families.  He is beloved by all of the physicians and staff at Jupiter Medical Center.

This cancer, however, will force him to stop working for six months to a year as he will undergo kyphoplasty to support bones that fractured due to the cancer, 4-6 months of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant at a major hospital cancer center.

Helena has and will continue to care for Peter at their home or at the hospital, but this naturally interferes with her ability to work full time as a pastoral counselor. The costs of the illness are beyond their income and savings.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Helena Mariades

Dear Friends,
Today is the 1st Anniversary of my Stem Cell Transplant, my “Re-Birthday.” Five months after my initial Multiple Myeloma diagnosis and many rounds of anti-cancer drugs, my blood and marrow transplant specialist prescribed the procedure to promote long-term remission.

A recent oncologist visit confirmed there is no active presence of the disease, and I am able to start reducing the daily medications. There is also a high probability of stopping the mandatory monthly infusions of immunosuppressant drugs by the end of the year.

As Helena and I rejoice in these new confirmations of my recovery, we remember the numbing first weeks, emotionally draining ups and downs of the early months, milestones of God's Grace, and enduring support and prayers of so many friends and coworkers. (Not to be forgotten the hundreds of "Get Well" cards that filled our mailbox and hearts with joy every day!)

A precious friend had given us a beautiful plaque which proclaimed, "Be still and know that I am God." I read it daily and slowly realized in the fearful moments, silent times, physical pain that - God is always working, always caring, always comforting and always guiding His children to restoration.

As my strength continues to improve daily, as this traumatic event in our lives  is slowly becoming a distant memory, we are strengthened in our faith for each day and are hopeful about the future.

I am so happy to bring you this update. Thank you for the amazing love and support that you’ve poured into our lives. May God return the blessings a hundredfold to you and your families.

With Gratefulness, Peter
