Thank you for visiting.

What happened? Our son Peter, a wrestler,  experienced a tragic accident during a sports drill at his high school. His knee was hyper-extended and dislocated.  The coaches immediately called an ambulance and accompanied him to the hospital. X-rays showed a fractured tibia and likely ligament damage.  Unfortunately, the severity of the injury was not fully diagnosed for five days.  Peter was was so brave as he endured agonizing pain that intensified each day. On Wednesday, a CT scan revealed that all the main ligaments were torn and an artery had been damaged in the original accident. Emergency surgery was done to repair the artery.  But the long-term damage was done. Because of the lack of blood flow in the earlier days, an entire muscle group had to be removed. Other nerves and muscles were affected. Now Peter is on a very long road: to reconstruct the knee and determine his long-term mobility: either possibly with a prosthetic, or otherwise. For now, we just don’t know. Time will tell. Thank you for your prayers and encouragement as Peter learns how to grow strong in ways he never dreamed he could or would.

Journal entry by Cathy Gilmore

Just a quick follow up to let everyone know that following the disappointing surgery attempt and the subsequent drug reaction…Peter has recovered well!

We are so grateful that his nerve pain following surgery only lasted about a week, and the drug reaction responded very well to the quick use of Prednisone.
He will be tapering off that med for several weeks yet, but he’s feeling mostly normal now.

He has recovered so well that we are able to take him on a short Spring Break trip for a long weekend to visit his sister in KC and do a college visit on Monday.

The long term plans are now that Peter has decided that he has no desire to have any more surgeries for a very, very long time. This is partly because his DRESS diagnosis has changed. His condition is now described as Multi-Drug-Hypersensitivity-Syndrome. (Because he reacts immediately now to new drugs…rather than after extended exposure with DRESS.) This now means that, going forward, his system will likely have the big reaction any time he needs to take any kind of a new medicine. Many of which are needed in surgery situations.
The dermatologist identified an antibiotic they gave during this last surgery that was new to him, which was probably the culprit this time. So, all antibiotics are to be avoided  (along with NSAIDs) for the forsee-able future.

In a wierd way, not having to deal with months of rehab and recovery is a little bit of a relief. Now the task is to settle in with living life with foot drop. Now, the plan is to work on getting past the Prednizone appetite, switch to an anti-inflammation diet plan, and lean into a good exercise routine and do some fun activities that work. Golf and shooting sports are now being considered for the summer. (Mom recommends Curling😆…but so far, not a big interest.)

Thank you so much for all the prayers and support. We believe that your spiritual support has truly sustained Peter and our family through this journey.
