Peggy’s Story

Site created on October 10, 2021

Peggy went in to open heart surgery on the morning of October 11, 2021 at St. Vincent's. They are performing bypass surgery on a beating heart and it should last 4-6 hours. We will start having updates on her condition this afternoon (10/11) so that everyone can stay informed on her condition. She will likely remain in the hospital until this weekend, if all goes well.

Starting this weekend, we would very gratefully accept help with meals. The Meal Train link is in the "Ways to Help" tab. Feel free to claim a meal spot if you would like to help in that way. Nathan will be coordinating meals and communication as much as possible as Shelley will be caring for Peggy as she recovers. Email Nathan with any questions on food or other ways to help at natepv@gmail.com.

Journal entry by Shelley Hughes

Mom is up and around and is able to do a lot for herself now, though she does wear out quickly.  Two days ago she walked out to the end of the driveway and back. The anesthesia fog is lifting but she is still having trouble regulating body temperature (a result of induced hypothermia during surgery).

She is really progressing well and her ability to handle the pain and frustration of the entire situation is truly amazing.

She does take 1-2 short naps every day but is up for taking phone calls when awake. Feel free to contact her by text to see if she is up for a conversation. I am sure she would like to feel a bit more connected with the world.
