Paul’s Story

Site created on August 28, 2018

Dear Family and Friends,

On August 16th, our beloved, Paul Overton was in a horrific motorcycle accident learning how to ride. With traumatic injuries to the arm, neck, and brain, we were told by doctors that Paul had little chance of making it. Without giving up hope Paul was sent to University of Maryland Shock Trauma where he is currently fighting for his life.

Paul is the most selfless, caring, most courageous person we know. Paul  truly has impacted every single person he has ever met. We sincerely believe Paul would not be here without the hope and prayers from everyone.  As we have been repeatedly saying this is the marathon Paul has truly been preparing for. If anybody could beat this, it's Paul. Everyday Paul has shown us signs that he is here listening, and in no way giving up. We believe in the Power of Prayer, and we know God is healing him right now.

We are starting this page for Paul for updates regarding his conditions, visiting hours, fundraisers, and anything relating to him. Paul is strong and will continue to fight and finish this marathon for life.  We are continuing to thank God everyday for healing our amazing Paul. He is truly already a miracle. We are all #paulstrong and #prostrong for life. Thank you to everyone that has shown love and support, and please continue to pray for Paul's full healing. We know he'll be out of there soon!

Much Love,
The Overton's

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kara Overton

Everyone!

Hope you didn’t forget about us! This has been long overdue,  and I sincerely apologize for being absent with updating everyone on Paul. I know many of you have been wondering how he has been doing, so thank you all for being so patient with us!

As you all know, our family made the big decision to bring Paul home to receive his care. Since then, Paul has done AMAZINGLY WELL!! Paul has hit some major breakthroughs in his recovery. We are especially thrilled to announce that Paul, for the past three months, is completely breathing on his own and the ventilator has been removed from our house!
Within two weeks of moving home, Paul quickly transitioned from being partially dependent on the vent to only using the trach collar. Shortly after getting off the vent, he was weaned off oxygen. He is now completely breathing room air. THANK YOU JESUS!  Paul has also started to eat liquid foods, and will soon move up to eating softer foods. The speech therapist that has been working with Paul these last six weeks, has him now using a speaking valve, which enables him to communicate with us. His medical team are so encouraged by his progress and anticipate removal of his trach within a couple of months. Paul’s physical appearance has made an incredible improvement. He has gained up to 40 pounds and looks unbelievable! We are continuing with physical therapy everyday, and will be starting to work with a standing frame to get him up and standing again!

What a great amount of God’s glory shown in our home these last four months. “Those who leave everything in God’s hands will eventually see God’s hands in everything.” This quote completely pertains to the season in our life right now. We took on a commitment that if we were to do in our own strength, we would have failed instantly. We trusted God to sustain us with everything we needed during this big transition, and He did it exceedingly. What a blessing to have Jesus alongside this journey with us.

This is an incredible turning point for Paul in his recovery. We always knew that Paul could progress quickly, if given the chance. Paul confirmed our belief in his strength once we brought him home and he proved that he can do it!! God has certainly  put us through a season of patience and perseverance. Although this season for Paul’s recovery is much longer than we would prefer or expected it to be, it has allowed us to see God’s  strength displayed in our lives. It has put  our hope into the unseen, refusing  to allow the circumstances change our beliefs of what He has promised for Paul, and our family.

Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Walking with God is not always easy. It will require us to step out of our comfort zone, and doubt will come. There will often be times where we think God has forgotten about us. We must completely stand firm in our choice of believing in God’s integrity in spite of what our limited sight can see.

We are so grateful to everyone for the continued prayers and support.
We are looking forward to an abundant 2020 full of health and many blessings!
May God bless all of you with this year!

Much Love,
The Overton Family
